The first time I watched Geary’s TED Talk, I felt that I understood him and the point he was trying to convey, that metaphors are around us everyday and we have to accept them. Metaphors create expectations but we can choose what to do with them. We can choose to take them however we want, but usually you need to think about the metaphor and what message it’s trying to send.
As I annotated the transcript I got to better understand his language. I got to better understand his thinking word for word. His transcript and TED talk definitely had me thinking deeper about metaphors. one line that stood out one the most was when he said “Brining together what we know and what we don’t know through analogy, metaphorical thinking strikes the spark that ignites discovery.” This line stood out to me because metaphorical thinking to me means that you are coming up with an expression on your own, that conveys how you really feel about something. By creating metaphors and analogies everyday it helps us think of other ways to say or express our emotions. In conclusion, I thought that it was helpful to look at both the TED Talk and transcript separately because I got to break down and look at every single word in the TED Talk, and how he said it.
